The Netherlands was not required to stop being Dutch and start being Belgian in order to join.

I don't know much about this history of the formation of Netherlands, Belgium or Luxembourg, and don't know what the membership in the Benelux region entails (if anything) so can't really comment.

The question was not whether Israelis should give up being Jewish in order to gain peace, it was whether being a Jewish nation at constant war is preferable to being an integrated nation at peace. Ask any outsider and they will answer if those are the two choices, then an integrated nation at peace is preferable. Ask an American and an integrated nation at peace is not only the better choice of the two. it is also the choice which fits best with American values of equality of individuals.
