The Israeli's invaded southern Lebanon in 1982 and didn't pull out until 2000. At the beginning of the invasion in 1982, the Israeli Air Force fought a monumental air battle over the Bekaa Valley in which they destroyed the entire Syrian air force in 2 days.

The history in jere seems to be as complicated and convoluted as the dispute. Read some of the other posts. Some say 6 years, some say 1978, and one says 1982.
