TJ,

"many did

just met wife's friend while in France, a prince of Laos, who had used some of his gold to buy passage way

in the particular instance, guns would have got him and family killed, food would have spoiled, and land was confiscated in any case"

That was my point with a multi post debate with shades, in the worst case scenario gold can buy you passage. His retort was that someone could take it from you by force and you should therefore be armed instead. Possibly true, but such an action could end up leaving a dead body or two which would raise questions with various authorities and kill ones future business. I am of the firm belief that there are still more businessmen than thugs in the world. (And in the case of the Vietnamese boat people, most of the guys who owned or piloted the boat were escaping also... they used the gold as a filter for who would come and who wouldn't..)

Could diversify and do some of various strategies... I tend to favor liquid assets personally located in more than one country. Just this week my Mom received a letter for another fee to pay to some German court on our share of a house in Eastern Germany, 69 years on. We actually got the money late last year for our share of an apartment in the same town. It was a nice house once upon a time as well. But by the time I saw it in 1998 it was derelict. So I think they demolished it and we get the land value.

Where do we Americans go with safe passage purchased with this gold?

It is hazardous to be an American these days.
