Nikon litho equipment sales rise versus year-ago quarter

The Semiconductor Reporter
July 27, 2006

TOKYO -- Nikon Corp. today today reported that its fiscal year got off to a typically slow start for its Precision Equipment segment, which makes lithography equipment for semiconductor and LCD production.

The company said it sold a total of new 27 semiconductor steppers in the first fiscal quarter ended June 30, including 15 i-line machines, nine 248-nm krypton fluoride units, and three systems using 193-nm krypton fluoride light sources. Nikon, which did not recognize revenue on any 193-nm immersion steppers in the fiscal year ended in March, also did not record any immersion tools as sold in the June quarter.

The company sold 28 systems in the year-ago quarter and 47 in the prior quarter. Nikon Precision typically has higher sales in the second quarter of each fiscal half-year (the September and March quarters).

Nikon also sold three refurbished IC steppers in the June quarter (compared to 6 in the year-ago quarter and 9 in the March quarter) and 27 LCD steppers (compared to 20 in the June 2005 quarter and 18 in the March 2006 quarter).

Net sales for the Precision Equipment business were ¥58.6 billion ($512 million U.S.) in the June quarter, down 16% sequentially but up 24% on-year, in yen terms.

Operating income for the business unit was reported as ¥10.5 billion ($92 million), compared to ¥10.6 billion ($90.7 million) in the prior quarter and ¥5.0 billion ($47 million) in the year-ago June quarter.

No change was made to the sales forecast issued in May.
