They're not in the mainstream of Traditional Catholics at all, they don't believe there has been a real Pope since 1958.

They are "Latin Mass" people. Very old school. Mel Gibson's problem is his father. A very old school guy who is a raving anti-semite. When "The Passion" first came out the critics called Mel an anti-semite based on his father's BG. Mel denied it. But it's now obvious that he is his father's son. Remember the song from "South Pacific."

"To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You have to be carefully taught."

I have been reading bloggers who defending Mel at the time the movie came out. They are now having to eat their words.

Gibson's only way out now would be to do a series of "Mea Culpa" interviews with major liberal talk show commentators and confess all. He could say that he thought he had overcome his father's indoctrination, but that his remarks while drunk show that he hadn't.

Would this save him? Maybe. He has a long row to hoe to come back. It will take years.
