So anger at Israel and anger at the USA are irretrievably intertwined.

That makes it that much trickier to win over the confidence of the Arab street and convince them that the US is the democratic model they should want to emulate in their own societies. If the US supports someone they perceive as evil or threatening, our bona fides are suspect before we even open our mouths.

For a long while, US was seen as more even handed between Israel's protection vs. Palestinians even though it was mostly perception but nonetheless there was some truth to it even though it was mostly talk.. But Senior Bush paid a price in loss support from Israel Lobby for that even handedness if you look into the issue.. If I remember, he got tough with aid when Israel started expanding on West Bank dramatically.. Under this admin, it has tilted completely pro Israel.. not even any pretense other then the usual platitude that is trotted out now and again..

"I usually do, too, but it keeps spilling into everything else that's going on in the Middle East because the US is Israel's protector, always has been since 1948, and that's not going to change. So anger at Israel and anger at the USA are irretrievably intertwined."

The Suez crisis of 1956-57 basically saw Eisenhower putting pressure on Israel and Britain to withdraw from Egypt.

It wasn't until the 1960s that the US become more heavily involved in Israel (Especially after 1967..) Previously Britain and France were Israel big military suppliers.
