In any case I guess it's axiomatic that sooner or later every discussion thread will contain a sub-thread on Israel.

I still believe we'll all be in the grave before the fat lady has sung on the affair. Hezbollah may be yet another rat-salad terrorist organization, but it's clear that any Muslim who heads an organization that finally destroys Israel will enter alongside Mohammad in Islamist history, and that's pretty strong motivation n'est-ce pas ?

I saw a facinating Israeli movie this week based on Ben-Gurion's Memoirs about the event leading up to the decleration of the jewish state. They were warned by the US as well as King Abdallah of Jordan that they would be attacked by 5 Arab nations as soon as they declared a jewish state. In a secret meeting between Abdallah and GOlda Meir Abdallah suggested that Palestine be annexed to Jordan and the the jews would receive autonomy in those areas in which they were the majority. The US state department want the Israelis to accept a UN supervised cease fire and postpone declaring statehood. the settlement's ruling political party ended up voting 6-4 to declare a jewish state.

It is a poser. What do you do if terrorists are firing missiles at you from somebody's backyard? The correct answer is to let local authorities arrest them and take them out of the backyard. But, there are no local authorities able or willing to do that. So, the second answer is to eliminate the backyard.

Or, you can question the premise itself, since it is coming from someone who is trying to evade war crimes charges.

The "hiding among civilians" myth

Israel claims it's justified in bombing civilians because Hezbollah mingles with them. In fact, the militant group doesn't trust its civilians and stays as far away from them as possible.

By Mitch Prothero

A dog walks through the rubble of buildings hit by Israeli airstrikes in the nearly deserted town of Nabatiya, Lebanon, on Tuesday.

Throughout this now 16-day-old war, Israeli planes high above civilian areas make decisions on what to bomb. They send huge bombs capable of killing things for hundreds of meters around those targets to destroy them, and then blame the inevitable civilian deaths -- the Lebanese government says 600 civilians have been killed so far -- on "terrorists" who callously use the civilian infrastructure for protection.

But this claim is almost always false. My own reporting and that of other journalists reveals that in fact Hezbollah fighters -- as opposed to the much more numerous Hezbollah political members, and the vastly more numerous Hezbollah sympathizers -- avoid civilians like the plague. Much smarter and better trained than the PLO and Hamas fighters, they know that if they mingle with civilians, they will sooner or later be betrayed by collaborators -- as so many Palestinian militants have been.
