I took family therapy in graduate school. The professor was really great. He said that any unit of persons, animals..birds etc constituted a family...

Therefore two people of any sex who live together are a family. Also their pets..

Values emanate from these units regardless of sex.. So this argument that family values constitute the basis for this nation is a fallacy to me.

This was back in the seventies I thought it a wonderful concept.

In fact we did not just learn theory in class we actually broke into groups that were to be a family, lived together day and day until problems arose and then took them to the therapist... I was an aunt as I remember living with relatives...So many issues arose..

The professor who was a practicing therapist would have couples who were in therapy bring their entire unit... the kids the dogs...cats..

One time I had parents going through a divorce and the only way they talked was through the dog.... Tell her she can not have the stero...etc. The daughter who was a student was a wreck. She had to have her own therapy.

I agree, but I see no reason that this precludes the marriage of gays or, for that matter, the polymarriages (think about Biblical times when the patriarch lived with his wives, concubines and children!). Family is a fluid term.

The nuclear unit usually means two parents and children with extended family including any relatives, but it also can mean everyone living as a social unit.
