I think Israel has NO choice at this point but to go in and clear out Hezbollah from ALL Southern Lebanon

Easier said than done. When Israeli goes into South Lebanon how does it distinguish between a Hezbollah member that is pretending to be a person in the crowd, and a person in the crowd?

<Being in the U.S. where we have never had to be subject to terrorist attacks we seem to treat the nations that do sort of like "chess pieces" that can be moved from here to there and strategize to find some elusive checkmate to end their problems.>

I lived in England during the IRA terrorist period. The English government moved carefully and always responded proportionately. They patiently waited out the problem and eventually, after 20 years, the situation has been calmed down and is moving into the past. This is the only lasting way to solve insurgencies. The current US and Israeli administrations do not have the patience to do the right thing, and the inevitable result will be a spiral into regional chaos.

I think Israel has NO choice at this point but to go in and clear out Hezbollah from ALL Southern Lebanon and hope some countries are willing to send troops in with an offensive capability that will keep Hezbollah at bay in that area.

That gives me a great idea! The US should just disarm the bad guys in Iraq. No weapons, no violence. Brilliant.

The US should just disarm the bad guys in Iraq.

So simple. Why hasn't Bush thought of it?

Israel has no possibility of eliminating Hezbollah. Hezbollah is an IDEA - an idea Israel's current actions are recruiting for and building support for in Lebanon. They may kill most of the current fighters, but in doing so, they'll create a NEW generation of fighters who've seen Israel kill their brothers and sisters, parents and grandparents.

Terrorism is a tactic that the hammer of the military will not work to defeat - any more than it's working for us in Iraq. It's the solution of stupid, authoritarian people, and will never work, but will only make things worse.

The way to defeat terrorists is to enlist the aid of the people they hide among. You don't do that by bombing and killing them wholesale.
