The "kill 'em all" mentality is just the rougher exaggeration of the "transform them all" idea, applicable to anyone who isn't behaving in a way that you feel is good for you and/or them. Of course, the lunacy of killing everyone is matched only by the delusion that one country and culture can reach around the globe and magically transform vastly different ancient cultures through sheer force of will and goodness. The latter is relatively more pragmatic and certainly more moral, but expecting either to happen is hopelessly naive. Yet a significant part of American opinion clings to that solution in lieu of fashioning difficult and less than perfect coexistence regimes with the rest of the planet.
