The party in Austin was a big-time power-broker gathering. Oil is a huge business in Texas. It is not at all surprising that there were oil execs there, nor that some of them were drunk and boasting about windfall profits, nor that I wouldn't slyly get one of them to confess something I'd been suspecting all along. I do that kind of thing when I get the chance.

I also found it fascinating to meet two US Colonels back from Iraq. One of them told me Halliburton ran everything. The other confirmed this and told me he hated Halliburton and once fired at a Halliburton driver who gave him the finger when he was ordered to move his truck. They also both agreed that the Saudis and the oil business honchos in that part of the world "are not our friends". In other words, Bush-Cheney's pals are not our friends. And if you look at history you'll find that what's good for Texas/Oklahoma is not good for the rest of the country. You'll also find all kinds of scandals in the oil business which is largely unregulated, especially with two of its cronies in power.
