All I can say is that you have never worked in public affairs abroad and watched how people react to official statements filtered through the media they watch or listen to most. Wishing they won't know or won't care doesn't work in a climate where everyone is glued to the news all day and hears this stuff stirred up and whipped up by different national media outlets. The problem comes when Americans removed from the situation simply decide what foreign audiences will think without trying to find out.
