Ah, so now those who don't believe in W as their lord and master "held accountable by a supernatural entity for the actions they take while they are in mortal form"? The "left" is doomed to eternal damnation, I guess. You just got to believe.

As near as I can tell, Bin Laden is perfectly happy being held accountable by a supernatural entity, as are most of his followers. Some people dig that line of reasoning, others less so.

Right or wrong, I'd rather have 63% of the American people believing they will be judged according to their works on this planet, than believing that the only person they are accountable to are themselves.

Hawk....I agree with you on this. But I'm troubled by the influence of the evangelical right on Bush. My personal feelings are that Bush had a genuine 'born again' experience, most likely a stop you in your tracks, total turnaround type of experience which helped him quit drinking, etc. And I have enormous respect for that. The problem is that Bush is not an intellectual, introspective type of personality. People like him and in that situation are inclined to find a pastor they like and put all their trust in that person's mindset. With Bush it was the Graham family...first Billy then Franklin. When I heard, after 9/11, Franklin G. state in an interview that Islam was evil and that Allah was not the same God Christians pray to, it truly worried me.

I believe Bush would also be susceptible to the 'it was God's will' mindset. I lost my job...oh, it was God's will....I blew up a country full of Iraqis....oh, it was God's will. We can't have that at a governmental decision-making level. It's a kind of fatalism and a negation of personal responsibility.

Worst, perhaps is the evangelical support of our rampage thru the Middle East because it brings us closer to the return of the Messiah. Most Christians don't study the scriptures at all. They assume the Antichrist will be an Arab-Islamist when the only clear scripture on the subject points a different direction.

At any rate, I've never felt stronger about the need for separation of church and state
