Israel could have tried other courses of action, sure. What they are doing now is not pretty but something very strange has happened. Since the world attacks everything israel does, the tough measures they are now undertaking sort of go under the radar. No different than blowing up a single building in gaza. Because israel has been demonized for so long, it really doesnt matter what they do or dont do. Tell me GST, after the Hizbola attack, what should they have done. Whatever you say it is, believe me the arabs and the world wide left would have condemned it as overkill. Cry wolf too long and you get israel unplugged. And if the somehow beat hizbolla and hamas in this war, the result will be good. Do the ends justify the means. In wartime that question may have an answer you or i do not like.
