There is one rule for not getting bombed or invaded from Israel that works perfectly: don't bomb or invade Israel first.

I don't think the Arabs are really alarmed in the sense of thinking they will be destroyed without provocation. I'm sure they are very frustrated that the US is still around to arm Israel while the USSR is no longer around to arm them. I'm sure they are mad that the US refused to help them destroy Israel.

If Hezbullah sets up shop in Baja California and begins to shell San Diego, I think you would find the American response far more "barbaric" than anything Israel is doing. No country is expected to just accept being shelled over the border, and by an organization sworn to finish what Hitler started.

First time I've heard anybody say that European "largesse" is keeping Israel afloat? Who is keeping Japan or Italy "afloat"? They have even larger debt to gdp rations.

I think our support for Israel is bad policy that works against the interests of the United States and the world at large. They have the largest regional military, nukes, IRBMs, and no longer need support.

What they need, is to be forced to get along by themselves, which would include getting along with their neighbors.

Osama bin Laden's #1 grievance was the presence of infidel troops in sacred land of Saudi Arabia and its support for its rulers.

Why were American troops in Saudi Arabia? To protect Saudi Arabia from an Iraqi invasion, and to protect Kuwait from another Iraqi invasion.

Why does America care about the region? Oil. Otherwise it might let its powers clobber each other unhindered like in the Congo. But America can't afford to lose access to the oil.

Now please explain how any of this would be different if Israel had been destroyed in 1967 (before the US gave it any support, btw), or had never been.
