<Oil> Yes, that is basically it. If not for oil there would not be one US soldier in the region and there would not be one line of text on the front page of any US newspaper more than once a year -- probably because of an earthquake. Israel is a special case. While you and I differ on this (that is an understatement), the very survival of Israel is at issue. Personally I do not expect Israel to exist much longer. As Israel grinds away in Lebanon I, like most of the world, grow increasingly indifferent to the survival of Israel. Israel cannot survive alone, all the Israeli bravado notwithstanding. And Israel is more alone every day.

Wow...I've spent 10 minutes trying to google up OBL's original manifesto and all I get is opinions as to what he said.

When I first read it right after 9/11, I remember 3 major complaints against the USA, Nadine. One was definitely the presence of US troops. OBL wanted Saudi Arabia to protect Kuwait. Another was Israel and the US support of it vis-a-vis the oppression of the Pals. Can't recall the third and I don't consider the pecking order significant.

I think Israel provided the easiest rallying cry to gather terrorist followers. I think troops in SA was somewhat neutralized by the fact that we quickly and easily pushed Iraq out of Kuwait.

I believe that we must either cut Israel loose or force a return and/or division of land relative to a peace treaty and give half Israel's foreign aid to build a viable Palestinian state.
