>>"It would be comforting to believe that a failure to conclude the Doha round of trade talks was merely a reflection of the political cycle that finds many political leaders at an ebb of power and popularity all at the same time. But if you look at the reason they are weak in the first place...."<<

The European Union firmly pointed the finger at the United States for the final breakdown. They said that Washington had been demanding too high a price for cutting into the $US 22 Billion it spends annually on US farm subsidies. The EU agreed to eliminate export subsidies by 2013 and raised its offer to cut farm tariffs from 51.5 per cent to 39 per cent, but was attacked by the US for not going further.

Brazil also suggested the US was most at fault for the collapse of the talks, saying negotiations on farm subsidies had made the least progress. Then India and Japan also joined in the fray when Mr Kamal Nath, the Indian Finance Minister, said all countries had improved their offers "except one country". The US stood self-isolated. The global trade talks lay in ruins. World trade will now begin to revert to a system of bilateral deals between nations from the present "rules-based system" which applies to all nations.

It's quite unfortunate, to say the least.
