On this thread (when Ken was moderating it), when war was declared, I said words to the effect of "The US better be prepared to be there for 1 generation worth of time...". Was of course, laughed off...

1. I don't think the gambit ever had any chance of working so long as we were going in unilaterally.
2. The gambit itself crushed our credibility and set us on a collision course with the civilized world we pretend to lead.
3. From the first day the looting started it was clear that those running the show had zero talent for building the civil society so badly needed in Iraq.

Bottom line -- don't play games where you try to justify the sleazy methods you use by hyping the glorious goals you have in mind. By the way, this is the stock and trade of the terrorist who blithely says "oh sure, I kill woman and children, but it is in the name of "fill in the blank" so it is justified.
