"Why even give them the respect of terminating them to thier face - text message much easier - hehe - I am reminded of that movie BRAZIL - very afraid to go out into the real world and deal with real people.."

This is hardly new.. (except for the text message although I am sure this has been before..) I was first fired 26 years ago. The pizza place left a message with my room mate. No face to face conversation.. no hand holding.. just a message saying "don't come in, we don't need you anymore...". I would have preferred a text message that time over leaving a message with my room mate. In the US especially I can see many reasons why one's former employer would not want you on the premises when you've been told you're fired. Likewise there is no law binding you to give any notice to your employer when you are quitting (with a few exceptions...) so why should they hold your hand when they are giving you the boot?

In regards to "being afraid" those fears are very real in some cases.. every year there seems to a case of a fired employee walking into his former workplace and shooting the place (and frequently people..)up.
