I noticed Apple announced the complete switchover to Intel 6 months ahead of schedule.

Actually my time frame was off. Apple is 1 year and 5 months ahead of schedule. At the original announcement they planned to have all Macs switched to Intel by the end of 2007.

apple.com

WWDC 2005, SAN FRANCISCO—June 6, 2005—At its Worldwide Developer Conference today, Apple® announced plans to deliver models of its Macintosh® computers using Intel® microprocessors by this time next year, and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007.

Apparently the Intel ramp problem invented here on this board is of little concern to Apple.

Re: Conroe is available on newegg

Fair enough.

But only at 1.8ghz and 2.0ghz (the E-Whatever)

Athlon X2 is widely available at 2.4ghz (the 4800).

Though there's this Monarch Computer has received it's last shipment of X2 4800+ CPU's.
We have plenty of inventory on hand, but sales are strong so order now before they're gone!
Pricing subject to change as supply diminishes.

So perhaps they're about to replace the 2.4ghz parts with 2.6ghz parts. But you're right, the 2.6ghz X2's are scarce. Not as scarce as the 2.2ghz and above Conroes, of course, but still scarce.

"nobody is suggesting AMD has production problems?"

I think that there are many here who were disappointed that AMD did not start FAB 36 at 65nm...

I think the crossover to dual core has posed some interesting strategical headaches for AMD given the limited capacity that they have enjoyed in the past. ie, how to balance manufacturing with improved margins...

I also think to a certain degree that some of the discussion regarding Intel's NGA ramp is tantamount to secretly hoping your friend misses a putt on the 18th hole thus putting $20 in your pocket. It's always more fun to believe that the supposed "leader" in FAB manufacturing is stumbling thus allowing AMD an opportunity.

Please don't think that your points have not already been noted.

To me, it will be interesting to see if 65nm does in fact start at mature yields... I'm hoping so...
