Now the last of these was a helicopter pilot. It's understandable to lose majors in combat in the air force, but it seems to me that losing three majors out of the relatively small numbers of Israeli Army KIA is a bit odd.

Can't speak for current times, but I recall reading a history of the 6 Day war and how mid-level commanders are expected to lead from the front.

It could have something to do with the rank structure though.. In the US Army, Major is a staff, or XO position, not a command slot. As you probably know, a Captain runs a company, while a Lt Colonel runs a Battalion, and a Full Bird Colonel a regiment, or sometimes a Brigade (which is usually a One-Star position).

So if the Israelis are commanding companies with Majors, it might make more sense since company commanders generally suffer a higher casualty rate due to their proximity to the fighting.

That's just a guess though.

But I wouldn't discount your view that ambushes, rather than assaults, are counting for these officer deaths.
