"Nokia stated that it is taking this action as a defensive measure to ensure there is a consolidated forum for addressing these issues and is asking the Court to enforce Qualcomm's obligation to negotiate royalties on FRAND terms."

the new CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo lives with the former Nokia Vice President, General Counsel in house law department.

I swear, only on these two threads on SI do we get this kind of info. How would you like to bust out that little tidbit of knowledge at the next cocktail party when the question of why all the Nokia lawsuits comes up.

Conflict of interest sees Nokia counsel depart

Nokia's global general counsel Ursula Ranin has quit the Finnish telecoms company to avoid a conflict of interest.

The shock resignation was triggered by the appointment of Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo as Nokia's new chief executive officer (CEO) with effect from 1 June 2006. According to well-placed sources, Ranin, who reports to the CEO, is Kallasvuo's domestic partner.

Ranin's resignation coincides with the introduction of further changes to Nokia's in-house legal function. It is understood that the company is on the lookout for a lawyer to fill the newly-created role of chief legal officer (CLO). Under the new structure, the CLO will be responsible for operational legal, while Ranin's successor will assume responsibility for company secretarial matters.

Meanwhile, in early 2004, Nokia revamped its legal department, expanding its repertoire from just two divisions to four. Multimedia and enterprise solutions business groups were added to the existing mobile network.

Nokia also opened a new corporate office in New York to serve as the base for the enterprise solutions business group and appointed a new US head of legal.

Nokia did not return calls for comment.

Kind of ironic - nokia broadcom, txn and company combine in a predatory manner to cripple Q in court and other venues. Anticipating Q will retaliate during licensing negotiations They yell FRAND in Delaware. Does Q have the bench to crush this crowd? I've seen whiners prevail when they shouldn't have. I hope Q is up to this very interesting battle and hope Irwin still has the fire.

OPK, Ursula Ranin, and Ilkka Rahnasto ...

GO,

<< Nokia's dreams that the Judicial system will rescue there sorry a--es may come from the fact that the new CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo lives with the former Nokia Vice President, General Counsel in house law department. >>

Exciting relationship. One lawyer with an LL.M. from the University of Helsinki, who joined Nokia as Corporate Counsel in 1980 and became Vice President of their legal department in 1987, living with another lawyer the same age who joined the Nokia legal department in 1984 and held the position of Vice President and General Counsel from 1994 to 2005 acting as the secretary of the Board of Directors from 1996 to 2005. In 2006, after departing Nokia, she became a Director at UPM Kymmeme Corporation and joined the board of Finnair Oyj.

Pleased to note that the article you linked is dated September 5, 2005 shortly after Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (OPK) was appointed to succeed Jorma Ollila as CEO in June 2005.

The author of Nokia's IP strategy, however, is Ilkka Rahnasto, LL.M. (Georgetown Law), LL.D (University of Helsinki) ...

... who has been Nokia's VP for IPR for most, if not all, of this decade.

Nokia's current IPR strategy and licensing strategy which is decidedly more offensive and less defensive than it formerly was, dates back to 2002 according to OPK who at that time was on his 2nd tour as Nokia CFO.

Some insight into Nokia's current IPR strategy can be gleaned from this book by Ilkka Rahnasto published in 2003 ...
