They don't egven have a great athletic tradition. They were no match for the Nazi war machine and they knew it. That's not to say they were cowards. That bit has been overplayed. You must be French. The French had a long military tradition. The English beat them, and then the English beat then, and then the French beat them and they chopped the head off their king and slaughtered all kinds of Frenchmen, and then the English beat them, and then the Germans beat them and then the Germans beat them, and the US saved them twice. They did beat Spain once...... Did I mention they fed their Jews to the ovens and tried to stiff the Germans for the Paintings and stuff from the Jews they sent to the deathcamps.... Shame is an odd thing. Their defeat, no defeat means you tried to fight, their submission to the Germans, and yes they could have fought, the English and Canadians and eventually the Americans, spent their blood in buckets for every single inch of French soil, and the French could have made some kind of similar sacrifice, but they didn't. France was untouched when it surrendered. The land of Napoleon and the Arc de Triomphe simply accepted German domination, many of the French people objected, but they had no choice. When you humble a nation, not once but twice, it is hard for them to be gracious. America was so generous after the war, You may not remember, but America rebuilt Europe. Look at the difference between the US part of Germany and the Communist part of Germany. But that is a big part of the problem every President has faced. The American psyche is so sure of itself. You stand up for what you think is right. Americans see everything in shades of black and white and well you miss the gray. We were talking about Jimmy Carter. He was a peanut Farmer. and President of the United States. George Bush is now the president, and I think he just wants to do a good job. I am not sure he knows how, but unlike your obsession, I think he is trying to do what he thinks is right. And he might be wrong, look at Bill Clinton, in France or italy Clinton would have been a hero, only in America was he anything but. I think Kennedy rewarded his friends, and Johnson for sure rewarded his buddies, Nixon well who knows if he had any, I remember that every single president in my lifetime has only been a man.
