That does make it difficult. Finishing them off would involve a monstruous level of collateral damage. They will be swarming mad, but they probably would be mad no matter what we did. Better to make them swarming mad, and kill the ideologically committed that stick out their necks, than to go on in a slow burn in an untenable situation like before 9/11. I think a reasonable person could argue that, but it's by no means a given. Creative destruction. I'm an advocate of creative destruction, but only in controlled environments, like organizations where I've pursued that approach. In uncontrolled environments it is at best reckless. If you're going to do it, you'd better have thought it out. We're not looking for short-term results. Maybe in the long term creative destruction will settle out well. OTOH, maybe in the long term growth, globalization, and prosperity would accomplish the same thing. Unfortunately, this doesn't lend itself to competing demonstration projects or time-warp do-overs.

They are individuals, scattered across the globe, some more concentrated than others. Most aren't combatants - they are ideological fellow travellers and enablers. You have the patience of a saint. She knows that, you know that, I know that, we all know that. Like the subject of the struggle in Iraq, this conversation is repeating itself like a stuck needle on a phonograph over and over again. There are no compassionate solutions that I can think of. It is time to acknowledge what you say and move forward. ( just couldn't write move on -gg-) Maybe someone has one or two they'd like to share?
