<<The paint I buy at Home Depot on the return shelf are usually custom mixed colors that the buyer didn't like.>>

Stores, including Home Depot, don't take back custom-mixed colors. They make this pretty clear when they mix a paint color for you, using the base color available off the shelf. It shows up on the receipt where it says NOT RETURNABLE.

I've got a quart of paint right now that I would like to return to the store. Unfortunately, I signed away that right when I paid for having it mixed to my specs.

Color-mixing is occasionally subject to store error, however. Had that happen a couple decades ago and never felt the impact, because our interior designer ordered the paint, which turned out to be red instead of a tan color. I'd like to be a fly on the wall and observe some of the disputes. <<gg>>
