One of the dumbest moves they ever made. They put in full-bore socialism, and condemned themselves to thirty years of grinding poverty.

One thing didn't have anything to do with the other. The English produced a kinder and gentler society. Many people were unemployed and they lived fairly well on the dole.

The reason many were unemployed was because the English economy was not competitive. They produced inferior goods. They tried to blame that on the workers. Not entirely true. Of course the economy of a country is very complex. Even economists can not fully explain things.

But one of the reasons the British goods were inferior was because of their class structure. If you didn't go to the right schools, didn't come from a family with a proper background, and didn't speak with a proper accent, you could not advance in work or in society.

The poor quality of goods the British produced was a management problem that they tried to blame on the workers. The Japanese taught us that quality is a managment decision. But when management is out playing cricket and having tea....quality suffered.
