That was the French Foreign Legion. Don't forget the German Hessians. Unlike the cowardly French who sent supplies to help fledgling America win its freedom from England, they belligerent Germans sent troops to help England subdue American freedom fighters.

The Legion invariably attracts those of dubious character so you will eventually encounter this problem.
