Edit: Another factor that may be in play is the confusion between the libertarianism and the Libertarian Party. He may be taking his cue from the Party platform, which is just plain weird as it tries to syphon off conservative voters.

Ah, one of the problems with a serious discussion of libertarianism is what is core and what is periphery; and, most important, who gets to make that decision. Is it the Libertarian Party? Some set of intellectual gurus? And who picks those? Etc.

I suspect there is a not hugely different problem discussing any political philosophy, though it strikes me as easier to identify core and periphery in mid to late 20th century American liberalism and conservatism.

But that takes us far afield.

As for wikipedia, I doubt it's ever going to be a good source for definitions of political philosophy. My wife is having fun with me for even considering it. Next, she says, you'll be checking it for definitions of sociology. ;-(
