I understand the argument for public funding of education but even if you are going to have publicly subsidized education there is no reason it has to be from public schools. Public schools are relatively pure "old school" socialism. Its not just "tax and redistribute", or "tax and subsidize", its government ownership of the means of production. In this case ownership of the means of production of education services.

The offerings of private schools with the notable exception of the ones for the very rich are a pale comparison to what a public school can provide. They can not begin to provide the kind of technical and athletic facities found in public schools.

Long ago, we decided that public education should be free and should be good because it was important to the survival and future prosperity of our culture. Its simply not possible to put a price tag on some things that have inherent value to a society. The public school system is one of those things.
