I think you nailed it. Problem is whether its shortsightedness or not, Americans arent going to back this regime forever at the cost of american lives and a great deal of national treasure. We can argue that point but for arguments sake lets not. Treating the above as a given that the american committment will not last beyond Bush (if only because a candidate in 08 who supports the war as it now is going would lose), how best to achieve a good outcome? Israelis may be on to something here as a minister just proposed weaning syria away from iran thru negotiations over Golan. We did this with Libya and Kaddafi in his day was far more of an enemy than syria is now. Under the father, syria always impressed me as a nation that played hardball politics rather than ideological and they are secular regardless of the fact that Alawites are close to shiaa. Syria, it seems to me, should want to be in the progress camp with all its dangers for the regime, rather than tied to the crazy mullahs. The way things are going, one day syria will be a parking lot like parts of lebanon are, either by israel or US. Bashir has some choices he might choose to make but only if israel and US are willing.
Meanwhile as we said last week, getting oil to $50 or lower will control how much terror money iran has, not to mention saudis who still practice their dual policies with the US and their own wahabis.
