Unless you are the type that just drinks very high end red wines you are living a sheltered wine life. Many top wine producers are going to screw tops which I prefer to synthetic corks.

Antinori
Banfi
Cloudy Bay
Sonoma Cuterer
St. Supery
Coppola
Bonnie Doon
Penfolds
Willa Kenzie

These are just off the top of my head from the few months or so. I seriously doubt you will see any grand crus going to alternative closures, the French will be ....French. However, wine geeks are starting to question the grand cru designation that shuts out some extremely fine wines from a premium designation.

Everyone else is experimenting and trying to find the best alternative for their style wine.

Australian and New Zealand wineries are at the forefront of course. Have you seen the trees that provide the cork? Very old and declining. Composite corks are awful. Had a champagne, yes, real champagne with a bottle cap. So much for the woosh.

As a person that has taught wine appreciation, taken sommelier courses, bought wine for a small wine shop, etc., I am constantly amused by the snobbery that accompanies wine.
