Perhaps the self-identified conservatives didn't grow in number in the 70s and 80s and 90s. OTOH the people labeling themselves conservative might be more conservative. Self labeling isn't the only way to measure the number of conservatives.

In any case it is clear during that time that the conservative movement has grown more powerful. Perhaps it just more organization and better ways to get its message out rather than greater numbers, but I'm not sure that the numbers are not in fact greater.

Also it does appear there is some slight trend even in that poll. "DECADE MEANS OF POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY" - Conservative
