We cannot kick the oil habit in the short run. We can produce energy from alternate sources in the medium term. Why are we not going after the problem on overtime? As the price of oil rises alternate sources will become more viable and the US may lead the world in developing them.

Did you know that China is the number one producer of solar water heaters?

Mindmeld, Yes, it could be done in 10-15 years.

Explain to me how we're going to become "energy independent" in 10-15 years if we consume 25% of the world's oil production. It's not going to happen with hybrids and electric cars alone. It's going to take a major change to lifestyles, demographics, economic infrastructures, etc., and that's not going to happen without a minor revolution.
