Instead of more compensation, you tended to get all sorts of perks that didn't count as income for the executive.

I can't really agree with that. Even on global warming but esp. on the tax discussion.

Likewise arguments that make an issue over Krugman's personal economic status.

The issue raised wasn't "Krugman is rich so why is he complaining", it was rather than Krugman is an example of how more education results in a higher income. It did use him as an example but it wasn't really an argument over his personal economic status.
