Yeah, it was a rough job. My father in law flew 12 1/2 missions, and spent the following two years in Stalag 3. The only good part of the job was being able to sleep in a dry bed until you got shot down.

The people in Thurleigh still remember the fliers and treat them like royalty when they visit.

I met some Brits and Scots when I lived at a B&B temporarily in Alaska. Much of the old industry is shut down and thye now depend on tourists. One did complain that the country was being invaded by Muslims.

their 25th mission after which they were done.

Neighbor of mine was a belly gunner on a 17, flew 38 missions according to his wife. Dunno, but 'spect the extra 13 were volunteer.

Some guys got bigger balls that others.
