Doren -

I got a call early this week from a local couple who run a fishing/scuba charter business down here. Their Dell PC was having problems booting up. (Pentium 4, maybe two years old.) I was able to get the machine running again, by installing a new video card, but they really wanted to replace it, since they have been having trouble for several months. Recently, Windows Update has been giving them fits.

We discussed what applications they run, and how they use their computer. It was all stuff for which the Mac offers identical or superior applications.

They're going to be getting an iMac. They were very impressed when I started up Parallels and booted Windows XP. But it turns out there's nothing they need Windows for anyway, so they're just switching completely.

just remember that these various hardware problems are equally likely to show up on the macs, since everybody uses the same contract manufacturers and the profit margins are too low for adequate burn in anymore.

So, the thing to look for is the best US-based support which apple clearly wins at. But there are certainly hardware problems with the macbooks and pros. They seem to have nailed down the random shutdown issue (heat sink and top cover from what I have read) but if you have the issue you need to drop it off to apple. Still a pain.

of course the virus and software bugs are nonexistant in apple.
