I rented it for my parents, who lived through the events in the movie. They loved it and thought it was remarkably accurate, especially given that it was filmed in the Dominican Republic. It is tailored for a very narrow audience (a labor of love I think), and if you are part of that audience is a the greatest thing ever, but I can see why it didn't attract a broader audience. He should have shot the thing in Spanish and sub-titled it, wouldn't have hurt the box office and at least the stilted English dialogue problem would have been solved. Spanish is a more formal language than American English and I think having the screenplay written by someone whose primary language is Spanish created a problem (for example it is very common for a parent to address his/her son as "mi hijo" in Spanish but not common for a parent to address his/her son as "my son" in English, the latter just doesn't sound natural).
