you would support completely their right to stop supplying oil to the United States.

Even I would support their "right" to take such an action, since it's THEIR OIL.

But they also have the right to suffer the financial consequences as we refuse to sell anything to them, or offer the protection of our military against their regional enemies.

We also have the right, which we should ALREADY be exercising, to reduce and/or eliminate our reliance upon their oil.

So a middle east that opposes any American involvement, and/or commerce with the US doesn't bother you, you would support completely their right to stop supplying oil to the United States.

I didn't say that. And the ME doesn't sell oil to any particular state, they sell it to whoever pulls up a big tanker at the spigot and pays the current rate. It's a commodity, there is no way for them to stop selling to the US and keep selling to Canada, for example.

Itch - they've got to sell their oil to somebody. We can just buy oil on the open market, just like every other country on earth. As one of the richest countries, we can afford to pay more than most countries, and shouldn't have any problems finding people to sell us oil. Russia is the world's largest exporter now.

Your fears are baseless. Iran will happily sell us oil if we quit busting their chops constantly, as will Iraq and every other Muslim country. It's our disproportionate support for Israel that REALLY upsets all the Arabs in the ME.

All we have to do is be fair and evenhanded. Bush is incapable of this, but perhaps our NEXT President can get the ball rolling.
