In Mn the liquor store industry still has a state mandated monopoly on liquor and wine sales. Somehow they keep the legislature in their pockets which surprises me since the some big grocery chains and Target has their headquarters here.

In Mn when you buy a politician he stays bought.

While analysts rank Costco's buyer demographics higher, I think there are many exceptions to your perceptions. ;-)

The two stores are really "apples and oranges." I see it very clearly here. You pay at least $45 a year to shop at Costco. Wal Mart is free. Costco is "bulk buy." I buy single items at Wal Mart. Costco has a much lower "labor to volume" cost because of this.

My Wal Mart is the low income store. My Costco has the rich people. Middle income people split.

Perhaps in your area, Costco is perceived as more upscale.

Yes, more upscale. I've never seen a Sam's Club. I'm obviously out of my cultural element here. <g>

I never joined Cosco because I resent having to pay a membership fee for the "privilege" of shopping, because I like shopping where they sell what I want, not where I get to buy what they sell, and because I could never buy enough there to make up the fee. I'm afraid I'm not much of a consumer. I do what little shopping I do on the internet.

Costco = Sam's Club (not WalMart). Perhaps in your area, Costco is perceived as more upscale.

There was a 20-20 TV program on Costco a few weeks ago. I was surprised to learn that a Costco store carries only 4,000 items for sale, while a Walmart carries 100,000.

Here's a synopsis of the story, btw:
abcnews.go.com

I love the part about Costco upsetting Wall Street by "overpaying" Costco employess. I wonder if there's a lesson in it for Walmart.
