The issue here is defining the threat and reacting to it appropriately. We now have one side spinning all the emotional hysteria they can without actually defining how this "threat" ever amounts to more than a group of political radicals who periodically try to inflict damage to promote their political agenda. That's what terrorism is all about.

It isn't world war, it doesn't amount to a threat to our civilization or our nation or our very existence. As Lucky pointed out, we have dealt with it since the 1970's, taken a few lumps and held our ground otherwise. To suggest it's anything more is just one of Fowler's aptly described cynical political tactics to whip up emotions ahead of an election that the incumbents fear they will lose.

What "inroads" into European governments are you referring to specifically? Are there radical Islamic ministers in any government there, or have they blocked the election or appointment of ministers from other parties?

They have the burning desire to succeed and the benefit of followers who are all too willing to be used.

I could say the same thing about the evangelical movement in the US but I rely on our Constitution to keep them from taking over too.

I don't do policy analysis based on lots of strong rhetoric and a series of incidents that are thrown together to become a sudden existential threat to our way of life. It is an A to G leap of logic that happily ignores steps B,C,D,E, and F to connect the dots.

But their aim is not to connect the dots in a logical argument - the aim of the drum beaters is to whip up emotion and get votes.

At least we get an acid test of the ploy in November.

Precisely! Strange how prefer to use their rhetoric in arguing against a terrorist threat while accusing others of vague rhetoric.
