Re: "...when people perceive that the leaders are improving their individual lots even perjury seems to some to be a minor issue and not a crime."

Hell... people will put up with a LOT MORE then 'perjury' (LOL!) from their government if it keeps food on the table, and the trains 'run on time'. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy are just two (out of *many*) good examples of this.

(Remember the old Roman saying about 'give them bread and circuses'? Same seems true down through history... people will oft give up personal freedom... liberty, etc., if the 'price' seems right. :-(

"... By slowly equalizing the exchange rate the communist bosses virtually insure that they can never be overthrown."

You appear to be agreeing with my position here... (but even I would never say that anything 'can never happen'.) And there is the problem of 'how slow is slow?' Is 1.6% in five years best described as 'slow'... (or is it 'glacial'?) Given the SIZE of their economy, and the HUGE rate of it's growth and the impact it's ALREADY having on the entire world's trading and nation's economies... a rate that slow is practically guaranteed to produce global disasters.

(Communist MANAGED economies cannot integrate with Free Market economies in such a manner without producing *serious* imbalances, and magnifying the failures and harms onto the global stage. Not that I *blame* the Communist leadership SOLELY for this [they are acting in a fairly predictable manner], no, it takes TWO to allow this 'tango' to continue. Only the West's lack of guts [and that means: mostly the US, since we are the most significant Capitalist economy in the world] allows the Chinese to get away with their distortions of free and fair trade.)

Re: [you've got THAT ONE 100% backwards! :-)] "Maybe you see it that way. You have not persuaded me on this point."

You think the Communist Party Bosses are 'afraid' of TOO MUCH prosperity instead of NOT ENOUGH prosperity?????????????????

What a peculiar concept!

What do you imagine would *most* excite the overwhelmingly large rural poor populations in China to REBEL, and to rise up and riot against the leadership... food in their cooking pots and money in their pockets or NO FOOD in their cooking pots and NO MONEY in their pockets??????????????

(If China's currency appreciated greatly, many or the elite *investors* in China financial assets would get stinking RICH overnight... but millions upon millions of working poor might be tossed out of jobs if the companies that employ them took a haircut on their export sales!)
