Rapid economic change would create a wild West mentality and the communist party would find controlling its population increasingly difficult. " 'how slow is slow?' Is 1.6% in five years best described as 'slow'... (or is it 'glacial'?) Given the SIZE of their economy, and the HUGE rate of it's growth and the impact it's ALREADY having on the entire world's trading and nation's economies... a rate that slow is practically guaranteed to produce global disasters." They are the growing economy. In their perception they will weather any global economic catastrophe better and recover faster than others. Why should they bear the cost of ensuring other countries' success? Remember, control is more important to the communist party than prosperity. Don't forget that we are still just capitalist pigs, and they accept that allowing capitalism to take root is the cost of maintaining control.
