I read the book long before the movie came out.

The book doesn't have the same fascist overtones as the movie.

Still I don't agree with the policy expressed in the book.

Edit - Also AS was talking about military service, in fact specifically combat service. Maybe "Starship Troopers", at least the book, doesn't go far enough for him.

I've often thought that it might take a threat like that in Starship Troopers to get us to quit killing each other here on earth and unite, as well as give us a reason to get out into the universe.

It would even be worth faking it. No need the fearmonger with towelhead terrorists, which aren't even as scary as the commies they are replacing, when you've got giant alien insects to fight!

We've got the technology to create completely believable fake realities. The military-industrial-government complex would become the biggest industry on earth. It would be a win-win!
