I don't want to be ageist, but I do think that the young brain is more plastic than an older one. We've seen that in studies with mice and rats and other mammals. I think young people adjust more quickly to new paradigms, and older people, who may have somewhat fixed thought patterns, adjust much more poorly- and I think societal change stresses them much more severely, causing feelings of doom. There's probably a biological reason for that- the old- after they've reproduced and raised their young- are for the purposes of evolution fairly disposable. It makes sense that the primary plasticity of our species would be in the young, since it is the young that MUST adapt if the species is to survive.
