Charles De Gaulle realized that France's settlement in Algeria, which was far older and better established than Israel's West Bank colonies, was a military and moral disaster for his country. In an exercise of outstanding political courage, he acted upon that insight and withdrew. "

IT might have been different if France was getting rocket attacks from Algeria or sections of it as it started to leave. France could write of Algeria with little risk or cost to France, maybe to French prestige, and also to some Algerians, but not to the land or people of France.
