The Pakistan government does not have the general support of the population. It is a very divided sectionalized and diverse form or rulership, wrought with corruption. We like to think of it as being like the USA, one country populated by a citizenry with a common cause but it isn't. You need only look at the justification for it's original formation to realize that it can never be a regular member of the Global economic community. It was originally formed by extremists who wanted an ideological government that could eventually rise to be a world empire. That is why all the extremist training schools of the 80's and 90's were located there.

Pakistan government has never had control over the outlying regions. The Military controls the civil regions but the vast frontier regions of Pakistan are under the control of regional tribal heads.

In general Musharraf is a military dictator who is in power because the five general regions which have their own military support have agreed to central leadership under Musharraf. I consider Musharraf's original take over to be a military coup. The typical history is for the new leader to charge the ex-leader with crimes that are punishable by hanging.

I suspect Musharraf's days are numbered. I don't see a real clear path for us to have a future relationship that is positive. I hope I'm wrong.
