After they're gone we have moved beyond the 50%. I still remember the big 'acquarium' at a fiber optics accessories maker. Inside several fiber optical enclosures.

One for Norway. One for Mexico, Pakistan, etc etc. "What is this for"? efficiency and productivity-driven Elmat asked.

The reply: "Oh! Here we test the enclosure according to each countries' norms." We put them inside. Hook them to a pressure monitoring system for 3 months. Then we send the records to the PTT in question." (PTT was the name of the T-Rex telcossaurus of yore).

An Elmat shaking his head in disbelief.

Now the norm-producing people are gone. Privatization and competition stepped and the rest is history. Today we have fixed lines redundant. They offer services. Prices went down...

And my number here (which cost USD2.500 in 1991 for the 'privilege of hearing a dial tone) is hardly used. I'm telling my wife. Our daughter will never have such device at home. By the time she becomes economically active, we hope the Juveve Central office down the block has become a parking lot or demolished.

I hope to live to see it become rubble. Trust me. I know the damage done in the last 35 years I work in this thing.
