According to the Wahhab fundamentalists, they don't treat Shiites much better than Jews. Stone every apostate, along with the Jewish pigs and Christian monkeys. They preach that line of purification to the young Wahhabi students in the Sunni schools in Muslim countries. The point of the matter is not whether or not the Muslims are the most racist group of people on the face of the planet. They win the Nazi contest - hands down!! We need to pressure our Sunni government allies in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other countries to promote interfaith respect as a point of Islamic law. There has to be something in the Law of Shari'a which calls for interfaith respect. Just because everyone is overwhelmed with the minority of terrorists, they need to include some reformations. I can't imagine that we can't accommodate some degree of progress for interfaith tolerance. Hey, I am offended that Khatami calls Jesus a prophet like Moses or Mohammed. I think it's blasphemous and disrespectful, but our culture has taught us to be mindful of other people's right to free speech. Mindfulness is the key to Buddhism, as it teaches patience and respect. On the whole, I would imagine that most Muslims are more mindful and religiously dedicated than people in the West. We have gone down a secular devolution of religious importance, making our society entirely dependent on state lows that protect people from religious persecution. Civil rights in this country establish a status quo that keeps the liberals and the conservatives from lunging at each other's neck. It works beautifully for a secular practice of daily life. On the other hand, it has undermined our religious institutions in Europe and the US. That is only the fault of the Church which is incapable of making itself appealing in the context of modern society. Perhaps they should find some new song writers, artists, writers, and other people to regenerate interest in the Church. This all boils down to the values that Jesus talked about with his disciples. He encouraged forgiveness, tolerance, patience, and mindfulness. He certainly never entertained the idea of man using religion to judge one another as an excuse to kill each other for not practicing the proper codes of worship. God was the ultimate leader by example. He delivered the message of compassion since he was given such a lousy track record in the Old Testament, where his strict intolerance wiped out civilization on epic scales. I think that the message of Jesus gave us the best example of the separation of Church and State. The modification of God's expectations in the New Testament was a blessing of forgiveness and peace. The incarnation of God through Jesus taught him the suffering of man so that he could become mindful of our experiences on Earth. There is no way that Muslims utterly reject the message of Jesus. They receive him as a prophet in Islam, so we had better start reflecting on his example to promote interfaith healing.
