In most places, if you attempt or threaten to attempt suicide there is an automatic 72 hour 'observation period' (lock up) imposed to see if you are a threat to your self or others. If it is determined that you are an immediate threat to yourself they can keep you and it is in a locked down mental health facility, but no criminal charges are associated as far as I know. ========= Assisted suicide: I think the grey area with assisted suicide is for people who are in extreme pain and suffering, are in an extended death mode, and are not comforted or encouraged by loving family and friends to the extent that they consider it worthwhile to continue in their state of suffering, and are incapable of taking any action that would terminate their lives. I am not sure I buy this argument, since we have hospice style of options. I lean toward anti-assisted suicide, but am bothered by the above (grey area).
