"Wang says about two-thirds of the energy used to make electricity is lost before the current reaches consumers."

WOW - anyone heard this before? Is this just speaking to the efficency of generators or is it that much of the current is lost in transmission?

Anyone know?

In any case seems like apples to oranges - why speak of electricity when we are comparing gasoline and ethanol???

ethanol made from corn yields more energy than does the fuel used to produce it

As previously noted:

(msg #67958)

----------------------
To net 1mil.BTU of end product:

"Petroleum to Gasoline: 1.23mil.Btu Fossil Energy Input"

"Corn to EtOH: 0.74mil.Btu Fossil Energy Input"

Now, to net the .74mil.BTU of Fossil Energy Input to produce 1mil.BTU EtOH requires .74 x 1.23mil BTU Fossil Energy Input, or about 1mil BTU Fossil Energy Input for each 1mil.BTU EtOH.

Which comes from:

There may be advantages to EtOH but big Fossil Energy savings is not one of them. Can't quite see how a 'big positive energy balance for corn ethanol' is obtained.

>>>Bush administration wants to end debate over whether ethanol made from corn yields more energy than does the fuel used to produce it.<<<

That is a great idea. Do lets end the debate.

However, one must question, and take very serious note, of the fact that the government committed to a piece of legislation, and thereby induced more than a little investment in new plant, before it settled the debate.

Regardless of whether ethanol is energy positive or not, this is not prudent, sober management.

Always watch what the government does. It may not make sense, so don't be surprised, but be aware of it.
